Concerto grosso No. 1 (1977) is one of the most significant
works of Alfred Schnittke. The basis of it is integration of different
musical periods ranging from the epoch of Gregorian chorale and Renaissance to
modern time. They create a peculiar type of integrity which the composer
himself called "polystylistics". Today it determines not only A.
Schnittke's style but also one of the most significant tendencies of modern
music. The structure of the Concerto grosso corresponds to the norms olden
genres. Still, the concept of the work and its musical expressive devices
belongs utterly to our time.
Almost all the instrumental concertos were written on the initiative of
out-standing musicians who were attracted by the high artistic merits of the
composer's music and his marvelous "hearing" of any instrument.
Concerto for Cello and Orchestra (completed in 1986) is dedicated to the
distinguished musician, the RSFSR Poeple's Artist Natalia Gutman.
